About E.T.

To explain the title of this blog and my Instagram. E.T. are my initials (Erin Thomas), and I like to train. I'm a personal trainer, and I train as a competitive weightlifter in my down time. Through all of this, I have discovered how incredible the human body is - at every shape and size.

As a wellness coach, personal trainer, weightlifting coach, and body positive activist, I work to help others celebrate, move, feed, and love their bodies. My philosophy stems from the Health at Every Size Movement.

"Health at Every Size® principles help us be at peace in our bodies, supporting people of all sizes in finding compassionate ways to take care of themselves. It includes the following basic components:

  • Respect, including respect for body diversity.

  • Compassionate Self-care

    • Eating in a flexible and attuned manner that values pleasure and honors internal cues of hunger, satiety, and appetite;

    • Finding the joy in moving one’s body and being physically active.

  • Critical Awareness

    • Challenges scientific and cultural assumptions;

    • Values body knowledge and people’s lived experiences."

Much of the fitness industry has become militant. Bootcamps and restrictive diets have resulted in yo-yo dieting also known as weight cycling which has frighteningly harmful effects. A meta-analysis of 361 studies concluded:

"Dietary restraint may create biological and psychological feelings of deprivation that lead to greater reactivity to food cues, cravings, counterregulation, disinhibition, periodic overeating, and weight gain. Biologically, it is often associated with unhealthy changes in body composition, hormonal changes, reduced bone density, menstrual disturbances, and lower resting energy expenditure. Dietary restraint is further associated with numerous measures of negative affect, diminished cognitive functioning, body dissatisfaction, overvaluation of weight and shape, and eating disorders."

With the power to make a difference in the hostile health and fitness industry we are all familiar with, I am taking a stand to help people create healthy relationships with their bodies and food. Through a positive presence on social media, sharing information through this blog, and working with individuals, I hope to change the way we think about wellness.
